March 6, 2002 Meeting Minutes     


Meeting came to order at 8:45 pm.

It was announced that a code of ethics will be drafted and should be followed by all board and Coalition members.

The Constitution was further discussed and edited. It was then ratified by the board with a vote of 12-0.

Committee chairs were asked to begin writing Coalition members through the listserv for recruitment purposes. The objective of these emails was to invite any interested persons to join specific committees within the Coalition. It was decided that each person should serve on only one committee.

Board members expressed the desire to meet with the families of the victims of the 1999 collapse. The details of this meeting will be decided at a later date.

It was suggested that the Bonfire Coalition have a booth for Parents’ Weekend. Kristin West will be working on this. It was also suggested that Frank Cox sell his book, I Bleed Maroon, at this booth or an adjoining one that weekend.

The check to gain tax-deductible status for any donations made to the Coalition will be going to Austin at the end of this week.

A committee to deal specifically with other campus traditions was discussed. Pete Ableson was nominated to head this committee and he will be interviewed at the next board meeting.

The board decided to begin and maintain a library containing documents concerning Bonfire and other A&M traditions. The duty of maintaining this library was assigned to the Secretary.

The Political Action Committee will now be called the Political Committee and they were given the duty of documenting the Coalition’s position on a variety of issue.

Student Body President questionnaires were suggested. The questionnaires will be drafted from questions concerning a candidate’s stance on Bonfire related issues and will be written by board members and sent to all candidates. The Coalition will not endorse a candidate. They will post the results of the questionnaires on the Bonfire Coalition website.

Every board member was assigned the task of reviewing the Bonfire Coalition website regularly and giving feedback. In other website business, a man in Virginia has offered to sponsor a year of service on the Internet for the Bonfire Coalition. This topic was debated but will be discussed further at the next meeting.

Individual pictures and brief biographies of all board members will be taken at the next meeting and will be posted on the website. The picture proposal was voted on. And exact vote was called for and it was passed that individual pictures and a group picture will be taken on a vote of 12-0.

The letters to the families of the victims of the collapse of 1999 were discussed in more detail. It was decided that all members wishing to write these letters would meet the next day.

A letter will be sent to Benjamin Knox asking for a meeting to discuss his possibly supporting the Bonfire Coalition in some way.

All board members are to obtain as many statements on “What is Bonfire and why do we need it?” for use on Bonfire Coalition website, shirts, etc.
